Antoninianus (4.03g, 24.00mm) Serdica Mint Struck: 281 AD
Description

Probus Serdica SOLI INVICTO

Obverse: PERPETVO IMP PROBO INVICT P AVG
Reverse: S – O - LI IN – VICT - O
Emission: 4
Officina: 2
Bust type: B = Radiate, cuirassed bust right
Exergue marks: // K A B
Literature: RIC 874var (unlisted obverse legend)
Rarity: R3

Note: Probus was the only Roman emperor to style himself "eternal"—PERPETUO. The appearance of this phrase on the coin makes it extremely rare and sought-after. If we add the rare and sought-after inscription "INVICT" (invincible) to the title, we can speak of an extremely rare piece, especially in the longest possible form of the title. This is one of three known examples. The first was in the famous P. Gysen collection, the second was auctioned in 2012 at Rauch's auction, and the third piece, which I'm writing about here, was previously in the U. Neumann collection.

Ref: ex.coll. U.Neumann
