Description

SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 BC. Drachm (Silver, 16 mm, 4.22 g, 6 h), circa 480-470. Nude horseman riding to right. Rev. ΣYRAKOΣION Diademed head of Arethusa to right, her hair drawn up at the back and wearing pearl necklace. Boehringer 283 (O132/R194). HGC 2, 1360. SNG ANS 95. Rare. Struck from somewhat worn dies and with minor deposits and light scratches*, otherwise,* good fine.

From the collection of Judge Hans-Joachim Specht (1935-2024), started in 1963.

Wreathed head of Persephone right; ΔI to left / Ear of barley with seven grains and leaf to right; ant to left of stem; to right, above leaf, cornucopia surmounted by two ears of barley, ΦI below. Johnston Class D, 4.12 (same dies); HN Italy 1577; SNG ANS 516 (same dies). Lightly toned, some doubling on obverse, areas of light roughness, small area of weak strike. EF.
