Probus SERDICA

Probus SERDICA

Collection by Graudenz • Created 1 week ago • 20 items • 11 views

Attribution and order of display of Probus coins from the mint of Serdica is based on RIC V.2.

Classification of busts is based on the fundamental work of Pierre BASTIEN, Le buste monétaire des empereurs romains.

The three variants of the VIRTVS PROBI AVG reverse are based on the classification by Ph. Gysen:

VIR-1: Emperor on horse to right, spearing enemy at foot; THE ENEMY IS KNEALING; LONG EXERGUAL LINE AT BOTTOM

VIR-2: Emperor on horse to right, spearing enemy at foot; THE ENEMY'S LEGS ARE STRETCHED; NO (or very short) EXERGUAL LINE

VIR-adv: (Adventvs scene: Emperor on horse with his right hand raised, to left; at foot captive)

(RIC V.2 does not differentiate between the VIR-1 and VIR-2 variants)

Note: Coins with the Clementia Temp reverse and Parma shield (minted during the second issue in Serdica) are significantly rarer than those with the Parma shield and the SOLI INVICTO or VIRTVS PROBI AVG reverses minted during the fourth issue in Serdica.
Only the third known example of this exact type. (Others in the possession of the S. Luethi collection = ex. M. Griffiths coll. and in J. Gesa Kiss coll.)  A beautiful circummint piece with full silver plating.

Emission: 2
Officina: 2
Bust type: H = Radiate bust left in imperial mantle
Exergue marks: * // KAB
Literature: RIC 841var (unlisted obverse legend and bust type)
Rarity: R2

Note: A very rare consular bust in which the emperor does NOT hold a scepter topped with an eagle (scipio). On 99.9% of coins bearing the consular bust of Probus, the emperor holds the scipio.
A very rare and sought-after obverse titulary with the titles bonus ("good") and invictvs ("invincible"). Probus was the only Roman emperor to use the unusual title BONUS in all of Roman coinage! The title Invictvs was first used in coinage by Aurelian. Probus later borrowed and used this title on rare coins minted at the Serdica, Ticinum, and Siscia mints.
Only the fourth known example of this type.
