Description

Probus Cyzicus SOLI INVICTO

Obverse: IMP C M AVR PROBVS P F AVG
Reverse: SO - LI _ INVICT - O
Emission: 2
Officina: -
Bust type: H2 = Radiate bust left in consular robe, holding eagle-tipped sceptre (Scipio)
Exergue marks: -
Literature: RIC 911var (unlisted no mintmark)
Rarity: R3

Note: An extremely rare variety without mintmarks. The Probus Adventvs Probi Avg and Soli Invicto issues without mintmarks are very rare and desirable. They were struck at the mints of Cyzicus, Serdica, Siscia, Rome, and Lugdunum and were distributed as part of the imperial donativa during the emperor's advents (visits) to these cities. The assignment of these interesting Donativa coins to a specific mint—due to the lack of any mintmarks—is based on a careful analysis of their style, especially the style of the emperor's portrait and lettering style, as well as the relationship of the dies to later issues, which have mintmarks typical of the individual mints. These coins are often misattributed, as RIC V.2 cites only the reverse of the Adentvs Probi Avg without mintmarks as no. 904 (Cyzicus) and the reverse of the Soli Invicto without mintmarks as no. 101 (Lugdunum).

Description

Probus Cyzicus SOLI INVICTO

Obverse: IMP C M AVR PROBVS P F AVG
Reverse: SO - LI INVICT - O
Emission: 3
Officina: 6
Bust type: H2 = Radiate bust left in consular robe, holding eagle-tipped sceptre (Scipio)
Exergue marks: CM // XXI Ћ
Literature: RIC 911

Note: The use of the numeral Ⴌ Attic to designate the 6th officina of Cyzicus is quite intriguing. Although it can be found in lapidary inscriptions, its appearance in coins is unique. Apparently also unique to the reign of Probus

Description

Probus Cyzicus VIRTVS PROBI AVG

Obverse: IMP C M AVR PROBVS P F AVG
Reverse: VIRTVS PROBI AVG
Emission: 5
Officina: 4
Bust type: E1 = Radiate, cuirassed and helmeted bust left, holding spear and shield (decorated with Medusa)
**Exergue marks:**Q // XXIMC
Literature: RIC 913var (RIC incorrectly cites Cohen 918 (consular bust) instead of Cohen 919 (helmeted, with shield and spear)
Rarity: R2

Note: A very rare and sought-after reverse type featuring the emperor on horseback attacking a kneeling enemy with a spear (VIR-1 in Gysen's classification). This is by far the rarest and most interesting reverse type among the few reverses minted at Cyzicus during the reign of Probus (although the same reverse type is common in Serdica). This is only the third known example of this type from Officina "Q" (but only the second example with Medusa on the shield; the other two examples either have no decorated shield or depict a rider on it).
