Probus SISCIA

Collection by Graudenz • Created 1 week ago • 39 items • 12 views

Attribution and order of display of Probus coins from the mint of Siscia is based on the fundamental work by Andreas Alfoldi: Siscia. XXXVI-XXXVII, 1937-1938).

RIC V.2 references are given as secondary references.

Classification of busts is based on the fundamental work of Pierre BASTIEN, Le buste monétaire des empereurs romains.

Exergue marks: XXI
Literature: RIC 790 ; Alfoldi 085.002 (2ex)

Note: Extremely rare type of military bust facing left with a gorgoneion on the shield, additionally featuring the rare reverse Spes Avg N, minted exclusively in Siscia during a short second mintage (the famous Invictvs series with INV[ictvs] in the obverse legend). The reverse legend emphasizes the close ties of the city of Siscia, where this coin was minted, with Probus, referring to the emperor as Noster.

Bust type: B = Radiate, cuirassed bust right
Exergue marks: Q / - //XXI
Literature: RIC 706var (unlisted Q on the left side) ; Alfoldi (unlisted!)
Rarity: R3

Note: A very rare variant with the "Q" officina mark (4 officina mark) in the left field instead of the usual right field. This coin is most likely a strike from a coin with a high silver content belonging to one of the emperors from the mid-3rd century AD. The coin is authentic, but has been resilvered and the edges rounded, as was the practice of early collectors in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Probus Siscia ORIGINI AVG

Emission: 4

Bust type: B1 = radiate, cuirassed bust left
Exergue marks: // XXIT
Literature: RIC 703var (unlisted bust B1) ; Alfoldi 040.002
Rarity: R3

Note: A very rare and sought-after reverse design with a classic Roman motif depicting a she-wolf suckling Romulus and Remus, but with the highly unusual inscription "ORIGINI AVG," unique in Roman coinage. This reverse design either emphasizes Probus's close connection to Siscia (where the coin was minted) or perhaps Probus's noble, ancestral, Roman origins for propaganda purposes (in reality, Probus came from a low social class). This particular coin, with its rare and desirable armored bust facing LEFT, instead of the usual right, is by far the rarest of the four busts with the "ORIGINI AVG" reverse recorded by Alfoldi.

Literature: RIC 730corr (unlisted reverse legend) ; Alfoldi 056.001
Rarity: R3

Note: RIC incorrectly lists the legend RESTIT ILLVRICI; this spelling variant does not actually exist.
An extremely rare and desirable reverse type, minted only during the second issue in Siscia (the famous Invictvs series with the title INV[ictvs] in the legend on the obverse), honoring Probus as the restorer of the Province of Illyricum.
One of the most sought-after reverses in the entire Probus coinage.
