Elephant advancing right, trampling on horned serpent / Emblems of the pontificate: simpulum, aspergillum, securis, and apex. Cf. Crawford 443/1 (all references for official issue); cf. CRI 9; cf. Bare head of Pompey the Great right; capis to left, lituus to right / Neptune standing left, holding apluster and resting foot on prow between the Catanaean brothers Anapias and Amphinomus running in opposite directions, bearing their parents on their shoulders. Description

Denarius dated 49-48 BC, struck under Julius Caesar. Military mint travelling with Caesar. Good Fine condition (banker’s mark). Elephant trampling a dragon or snake / Pontifical emblems; cumulus, aspergillum, axe and apex.
 
Ex. The Helmingham Hall hoard. Discovered in 8 September 2019, with subsequent finds in 2020-2021. The final coin in the hoard was struck in 46-47 AD, providing us with a terminus post quem during the reign of the emperor Claudius (41-54 AD), who started the invasion of Britain in 43 AD. Export license given by UK authorities autumn 2024.
